If you watch lightning and then count the time until the crack of thunder in seconds, you can work out how close you are to the middle of the thunderstorm.
2.5 seconds is roughly half a mile to the centre of the Thunderstorm
5 seconds is roughly 1 mile to the centre of the Thunderstorm
10 second is roughly 2 mile to the centre of the Thunderstorm
