Helpful advice with new born babyEvery baby is individual, so what works for each child is different.
Saying that here are a few things that helped us, if anyone wants to email me and add to the list please do. Our baby is called Dominic and he is a happy boy.
Here are some points.
Baby's nails get sharp, and they scratch themselves. Our baby scratched his eye, his face you name it. The answer of course is some anti scratch gloves but long term you need to cut their nails. Obviously you wait for them to harden after birth (took a week or so in our case) and then you trim them.
There are many stories of people using scissors or clippers and nipping their baby's fingers. The simplest solution given to me by a customer is that of a baby emery board.
We found Moltex bio-degradable nappies great. No nappy rash. They can be ordered off the web in bulk. The nappies rot away in soil. They are very absorbent and aren't bleached. (nappies aren't as white because of it) When we went overseas we used other nappies, we quickly noticed that our son's bum turned a nasty shade of red, when we got home and went back to Moltex the red bum quickly disappeared.
Newborn baby skin is delicate and because of this it's not a good idea to use baby wipes when the baby is young. To clean the baby when changing a nappy we used a flannel (rinsed in warm water) and to dry some cotton wool. No chemicals are needed. Of course there will be a time when the baby is a bit older when you will find baby wipes a simple solution, especially when you are out.
We purchased a GRACO 3 in 1 pram, its cheaper than Mamas and Papas and absolutely great, it even comes with a decent car seat and a cup holder. The only problem is due to its size, its a bit hard to travel with on buses. Also, check that it can fit into the boot of your car. When our child was around 6 months we purchased the Graco Citisport which is much lighter and smaller and very cheap, but cannot be used at birth as it does not lie flat.
Lansinoh cream is great for nipples when they get sore breast feeding (available in Waitrose and some chemists) and was recommended to us by Midwives.
If you get a Cot Bed make sure it has be placed at 3 height position , many do not.
If you use bottles, buy a microwave steriliser or (if you have the space) a plug in steam steriliser. Very easy to use, no chemicals.
The best feeding bottles in the UK are Dr Browns. These reduce wind, are very slow feeding and made from a sturdier plastic than others. Available in Mothercare, John Lewis and direct off the web.
To help when changing nappies, have something colourful and bright over the changing mat. We used a very large, happy caterpillar. Our baby loves it.
When choosing a Moses basket, purchase the longest possible. Babies grow, ours grew out of his in 8 weeks, not a very good buy for such a small duration of use.
When introducing solids, avoid greens at the beginning or you will have the smelliest poos in record. It isn't easy for babies to digest such food. We started with pumpkin and sweet potato.
Avoid strawberries for the first year as some children can get rashes from them.
Babies love people sticking their tongues out at them even from an early age.
When our child started solids, we used a Bumbo seat. It was great. When children are older and you want a high chair just buy the Mothercare highchair at 30 pounds, it is light and folds away.
And that's my baby tips, for the while anyway.
