Can Animals Laugh?
[Back]
It seems they can.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4401695.stmAre you a mind reader Charles?
I very nearly asked this very question at the end of my posting on babies and laughter :!:
Mind you I noticed the date on the BBC reference you gave so I think I'll look up the original article :). I'm old enought to remember the "spaghetti harvest" :) :!:
Seems like it could be true though and would make a lot of sense. (Linda)
Of course they can laugh. Especially after they have just chewed through something expensive! (Izzy)Also with delight, though often soundlessly.
Bonnie, my current pooch, was an inner city dog until I adopted her. We live beside the sea and the following morning, she just stood staring. When I decided to take a chance and removed her lead, she just ran from end to end till she could run no more. For weeks she jumped from rock to rock and investigated every rock pool with a grin from ear to ear. Happiness just oozed from her each time we w3ent over the level crossing down to the beach.
My previous dog also loved water and especially mountain streams. There was one pool with a large sloping rock overhanging it. Annie would climb onto this rock, spreadeagle herself on it and shoot down into the water. Then she would swim to the other side, come back and start again. This went on for as long as I could stay there.
Another favourite game was at another beach, where there was a high sand dune, she would go up the footpath to the top of the dune, jump off and slide to the bottom. Her eyes would shine and mouth wide open with her tongue lolling out.
Funnily enough she rarely made a sound. She had a very rusty bark, which embarrased her and she would go and hide if we laughed.
Love and smiles
Joy (JoyB)
Oh what a lovely story Joy. Annies sounds as if she was a real joyous character, I'm so glad your new dog is having so much fun after city life.
The dog next door loves sliding on her tummy down the steep bank and our dog likes to drop his ball down the steps, watch it bounce and then retrieve it (when he can't get us to be his slaves that is :) ). I'm very amused by the smirk on his face when on those rare occasions he gets one over on the cat next door and traps her up a tree. I feel really mean calling him in when he's obviously so happy but the cat's look of hurt pride is so sad  .
I'd love to be my dog just for one day to experience the world through his senses (except for doing what dogs do when they meet each other and come across a cow pat of course :D ) (Linda)We have a dog who is a bit of an escape artist - she can dig for England and no sooner than one hole is blocked up in the fence she has made another
We chase her up and down the road and she is laughing her socks off at us  We can just imagine her saying to herself " Look at them the ridiculous humans, they cant run for toffee!!!" (Purple)
One of my dogs Chelsea (yorkie poo) laughs. When I come home from work, she stands on the arm of the chair and hops about on one leg then the other front leg - doing a jig, with a huge grin (showing teeth) and smiley eyes looking at me. Then she sneezes, and grins again - so we play sneeze at each other. She loves it, and always looks like she is having a whale of a time!
My wife used to have a spaniel X called Lady and she used to smile all the time - a real grin, with squinted eyes - used to happen more when my wife would say to her "who's a lovely little Laydeeeeeeee....." Lady would grin, ear to ear, run off, fill her mouth with dog biscuits and drop them at my wife's feet.
Animals are incredible. (andyjturner)Hi there I once had a sheep dog who could smile from ear to ear. Only thing was a freind thought because the dog was showing its teeth it was going to eat her. But I do think that animals do smile. My friend had a dog that would keep running round after it's tail and then stop and you would swear it had a big grin on it's face it was so funny
