Hypnotherapy schools?

Where did you train/ where are you training? If I wanted to train as a qualified hypnotherapist where would I go? How do I go about it? How do you know that it is a great school / course? Is it better to go to a school rather than home study? And........how much does it cost? How long does it take? Any info and advice much appreciated. I have considered this for some time since completeing my NLP Practitioner Training as we covered some hypnosis in that and I really enjoyed it and believe I was good at it. Thanks! :)In the UK prices vary, there is no alas standard. It really depends on your knowledge I had been learning about hypnosis and practising on students at university 10 years before I became qualified, I suggested to Kate to use Robert Shields course which is correspondence, which will be fine for you Purple, however if you have little knowledge on the subject, a 1-1 or small group is best and just because a course is expensive doesn't mean its good. I will look that up Charles, thanks. Are there any danger / warning signs I should look out for? I mean what should I look at regarding becoming qualified properly at the end and whom should a good school be registered with? I would not want to say I have a great knowledge already but have the NLP and HNLP training, along with having worked in the past running Relaxation and anxiety management groups, so something! Thanks for your help. (Purple)

When qualifying obviously the organisation you should belong to should not be involved in stage hypnosis and in the UK a member of the UKCHO. To join the BIH (British Institute of Hypnotherapy) I wrote an essay and article which appeared in their magazine about my specialty of hypnosis and tinnitus but I think they might accept people directly form Robert Shields College as his own articles are now in their. The BIH also offer a discount on indemnity insurance. Warm regards Charles (charles vald)

I spent 2 hours last night reading everything on the website by Robert Shields. Wow! It all seems very comprehensive and incredibly cheap. I don't know exactly what I was expecting costs to be but thought it may be many more times that! I was interested to read about practising hypnotherapy in the UK being under common law and that in the UK there being no such thing as a [b:07dccc74a2]recognised[/b:07dccc74a2] hypnotherapy qualification with anybody in the UK having the legal right to practice hypnotherapy without membership of any organisation!! :? yes it is very comprehensive. One day there might be better regulations, it really is a shame. (charles vald)

Hi Follow Charles advice and you won't go wrong. I am currently studying with Robert Sheilds and i am about ready to take the final exam , i have recently started up my own practise from home and it's going just fine. Everyone on this forum has been a great help particually Charles , someone is usually around if you need help. Contact me if i can be of any further help Debbie (our-kate)

Thanks Debbie, Sorry that I presumed your name to be Kate in the pm I sent you!!! I'd be interested to know the folowing: How long have you taken to do the course? Have you found it to be acceptable that you haven't had any sort of supervision / practical observation? Thanks, Ally (Purple)

Hi Ally I am still studying the course , have been on approx 3 months and am ready to take the final exam. I have found it fine but must be honest i think i would have prefered personal supervision as i said i have had help off the forum but on the plus side you are left to work either as quick or slow as you want so i would say the good points outweigh the bad ones. My next choice of subject i wish to study after my hypnotherapy exam is either cognitive therapy or NLP so i'm looking for information on both subjects. I have as i said now started my own practise from home ,i offer counselling ( i am fully qualified in that feild )and hypnotherapy but i am finding nearly all my clients come for hypnotherapy.I would love for you to keep in touch and let me know how you are doing, oh are you in the UK ? Kind regards Debbie ( our-kate is my user name ) (our-kate)

Hi Debbie, Yes, I am on the Isle of Wight. Where are you? I am a qualified NLP Practitioner and private work is few and far betwen on the Island. Never regret doing the training though as it has helped me and my friends and family so much in so many ways. I worked in a Behavioural Therapy Team for the Local Education Authority for a few years where we ran group work sessions in middle schools for young people with behavioural problems. We used almost 100% NLP Techniques and had outstanding results. The Team are still up and running and still have very good results. I left to spend more time at home with my youngest and to start up privatley but that has not been fruitful. Shame I haven't been able to make a living out of it privately but I think it will go well with the Hypnotherapy so I am going to go for it! Good luck in your business and well done for completeing the course in three months. How many hrs a week roughly have you spent studying / reading the course material and in practical experinece? Sure the exam will go well and from what I read you get the result immediately so let us know when you've done it! Take care Ally (Purple)

Hi Ally I spent quite a lot of time studying that is how i have done things quite quickly but of course like i say there is no set time for you to study its up to the individual.also i have spent quite a few evenings practising on subjects .I don't think this would ever make me rich, my aim is to spent quality time with a limited number of clients given them my full attention.I am really enjoying this new career and intend to study further where my main interest lies in mental health. I live in the North East Durham to be exact Have you decided if you are doing home study or a class ? Keep me updated Take care debbie (our-kate)

I think I will go for this home study course. I have emailed almost everyone on my address list who lives on the Island this afternoon to see if there are any volunteers interested if I go ahead and I have three positive replies already as well as two family members who had agreed previously. So I have 5 subjects already. I think I will go sign up and pay the money! If I feel that at any time I do need the supervison / observation I have a couple of people I could probably call on who may help. When the kids are back at school I would be quite happy to spend several hours daily working on studying. But if anything cropped up then it is convenient that I could just leave it for the time I was needed elsewhere. Rather than apply for a class and possibly miss one if anything untoward happened. I like that flexibility of the correspondance course. Thanks for suggesting it Charles and thanks too for your advice Debbie. :) (Purple)

Hi Ally How you doing ? thought any more about signing up for the course ?i am ready to take the final exam but Robert is away till Feburary so i'm rather stuck till then .Things are quiet here with bookings at the moment but after Christmas i am hoping to get more advertisments, the local paper being my first port of call.At the moment it's just word of mouth so until i get reconized it may be slow . I have had guinea pig subjects and it's being very sucessful but that's not the case with family i found that very difficult and when i mentioned it to Charles and others on the forum they suggested stay clear of family members and i must agree that is very true.I have decided to go next for the cognitive therapy course as i think it fits in with what i'm doing and that is where my interests lie , i am enrolling with the open college in January ( they do excellent hypnotherapy courses, i forgot to mention that to you yesterday )I did my counselling diploma with them and i can't fault them at all that why i am going through them with the cognitive therapy course. look forward to hearing from you you are welcome to e-mail me personally if you like debbie Kate (our-kate)

Have pm'd you my email Debbie. Shame you cant take the exam then til Robert is back. I was going to sign up soon. Would that not work til Feb when he back then or would it all still come through autonmatically do you think? I am clear now why an email I sent him has not been answered! Does the course cover abreaction by the way and if so in how much detail? (Purple)

you will most likely not get a reply till he returns , that happened when i was just starting i got no reply for a long while. Most things are covered but not in great detail.all the scripts you have to print off where with the open college all books papers etc etc come recorded delivery through the post.I know the open college is more expensive but i feel that is reflected in the service you get.The robert Sheilds method has given me the basic introduction into hypnotherapy but now i follow my own script and do things my own way which i am more comfortable and confident with.
