Finding things better
[Back]
hi to all
i'm reading a book by the hypnotist Ursula Markham and she says that she does a 10 minute short test on each client and that will tell her if the subject is suitable for hypnosis but she fails to go into any detail about the test , can anyone enlighten me on this subject . I'm getting on much better with my training now i have concentrated more on my own experiences of hypnosis and followed some of the advise off the hypnotherepay Cd's i use. I am more confident using a technique i know and relating to the CD's i am used to .
Take care everyone
DebbieHello Kate,
I'm really glad you are getting there.
I don't really think you need to test them.
If it works, than great, however if the test doesn't work, the patient will feel they can't be hypnotised and then you are really stuck.
The tests some therapists use is the placing hands in front of you making one go up (feel light) and the other down (weight)
Otherwise include hand clenching, etc.
What is more important is finding if they are a more auditory or visual person.
See if you can get them to visualise a vase rotating in their mind, and see if they can play a tune they like back in their head and using this information you could adapt your script to use more visual or sound related imagery (e.gif auditory use the the music on my cd get them to focus on it ) but in the main it isn't really needed.
What are other peoples thoughts? (charles vald)
I am not a hypnotherapist at all but do feel it is very important to assess if your client is more auditory, visual, kinaethestic etc; so that you can match these tendancies and build the best rapport. Then your client will feel at ease with you completely which must be a good place to start?!
After all " [b:670b264bc1]Those who are alike like each other[/b:670b264bc1]!" (Purple)Hi charles,
if subjects are not tested, then how can one know that they are in trance and that they are ready to accept suggestions?
I find that relying on trance signs alone is not sufficient. Is there another way to be sure that they are 'under'?
kind regards,

Slow Breathing, Relaxed Body Posture, their speech, maybe a bit of muscle twitching.
You could test at this stage if you wished but the question what are you prooving and to whom.
If at this state the patient can be helped that's good enough for me. (charles vald)Hi charles,
the signs you mention are indeed trance signs, but they are also pressent when a person is just physically relaxed. Hypnosis is more then just being relaxed, so as long as testing isn't done, how do we know that the critical factor has been bypassed and that acceptable selective thinking has been established?

A very good point.
I feel the tests like shown on this link are great if you have a doubt with a patient or starting off or it is a patients expectation to see it.

However you can simply read the signs, the speech seems for me the most important area. what do you do?
Charles (charles vald)Hi charles,
thank you for referring us to the website, very interesting.
After the induction and deepening I always test my clients. The usual test I do is the hand levitation test.
Have a nice weekend,
