thanks for the reply,no dought with more study and practise i will be able to master the art of hypnosis. i am realy interested in this and do want it to work. anyway thanks again take care Debbie (our-kate)

Hi Debbie, Good to see you again. Can you be more specific with what exactly you are finding difficult? When you say 'it's putting things into practise that I'm struggling with.' what does that actually mean? My feeling is that you need to grab any willing guinea pigs and practise, practise, practise on them! I'm assuming that while you are in the classroom and everything is on paper, or while you are with people of a like-mind you're ok, but once you are away from that supportive environment you rather feel like you have lost a life-line?? In that case, yep, lots of practise to build up your confidence! If you don't have people around, just get a teddy bear, sit them in a chair and go through some hypnosis with them. Or perhaps, record yourself so that you can listen back on yourself objectively. Could you arrange some support sessions with some of your fellow students? There is not much use learning a principle, you have to *do* it - you need to develop your voice, your timing, get to know the indications of trance etc. A good course should give you plenty of opportunity to work in pairs or as a group where others can observe and offer constructive criticism. I'm sure you'll find many who are more than willing to allow you to work on them, but it will probably be more beneficial in the beginning to work with fellow students or practitioners. Good luck! wingsoflove (wingsoflove)

hi thanks for the reply and for your helpful information where i'm having trouble is when i'm attempting the basic induction routine my subjects just don't seem to want to close their eyes and drift off. Is it because my subjects have been members of the family ?i think i would feel more confident and happy if i were practising on a stranger ! My written and study work is coming along great but like i say i'm struggling in the main area.am i expecting to much to soon ?i've been doing the course now for only 3 weeks and work everyday for a good while.i'll keep up the practising as what i have learnt so far is excellent and made me decide that this for me ( well that's if i ever get to master it ! ) thanks again for you help Debbie (our-kate)

hi thanks for your kind offer but i'm in the north east ! I am finding some of the suggestions from my last reply very helpful I am rather frustrated as i am doing everything my mentor instructs but don't seem to be able to get my subjects anywhere near relaxed. I'm not giving up as i think with time and patience i can master this.the more i'm reading my course papers the more interesting this whole subject becomes and i'm in no dought this is something i want to do thanks again for your offer of help take care Debbie (our-kate)

Hi Debbie, Are you doing Eriksonian style hypnosis or something else? Just a few things I'll throw out to you. -) The more 'obvious' things might be that your voice is not low, slow or steady enough or that your clients are picking up on your nervousness (in which case, perhaps you need a couple of sessions yourself so that you feel confident with what you are doing!) -) I can be in trance with my eyes open, quite easily and a confident practitioner will be able to pick up on other cues, such as skin palor, muscle tone etc that the client *is* in fact in trance with their eyes open. You may find that your family members are actually in trance! -) If *you* feel more comfortable with your client having their eyes closed, you could either ask them to do this as you start or put in a suggestion like 'You might find it more relaxing to gently close your eyes' and then go on to tell them that they remain in control of the session and at any point can get up and walk out, perfectly safely....... -) I would also ask, as these are members of your family, what their real feelings are on hypnotherapy - are they *willing* guinea pigs or do they feel obliged to help you out? -) You wrote [quote:ef9a0cfe5c="our-kate"]i am doing everything my mentor instructs but don't seem to be able to get my subjects anywhere near relaxed. [/quote:ef9a0cfe5c] I wonder whether it is your job to 'get your subjects relaxed'? It's a little like meditation - it's not a state of 'doing' it's a state of 'being'. I think success will soon follow once your confidence builds and *you* are relaxed yourself. A bit like holding a baby - the baby usually reflects us in their tension levels. You have a valuable assett in all of this Debbie - your obvious perseverance. Good things will come. In fact I was reading a book last night on Shamanism where the author wrote that the people who have the greatest problems at the beginning, ususally turn out to have the most profound experiences in the end. Ok, so she was refering to Shamanic journeying, but I don't see why the same can't be true for you. :) wingsoflove (wingsoflove)

hi wingsoflove thank you very much for your time and help it is much appreciated you have a good point about family members,no they are not very positive about hypnosis and i think coming into the thing with a negetive attitude is bound to have a negetive effect on the outcome. I am studying with the Robert Sheilds College of Hypnotherapy which is a home study course and i must say the paper work and all 31 lessons are very detailed and set in a easy to absorb fashion.I can e-mail the mentor if i have any problems or i can phone but i don't want to appear a nuisance so i am having contact only when i feel it necessary.I have had help from charles vald and yourself which is very kind of you both.i may try changing the method of trying to get the client into hypnosis at the moment i am trying 'the spot on the ceiling method' visulisation and as i have told you i'm getting no where.any suggestions.i think i need lots more practise with the voice ( my broad geordie accent is not helping ! )ok i'm about to get absorded in my studying taking on board your tips oh are you a hypnotist ? thanks again take care Debbie (our-kate)

So Kate how is it going? I was thinking have you simply tried to script my induction script from my CDs and use that obviously alter bits as you feel fit, you can even use my music. Charles (charles vald)

Debbie, just a few comments. First of all your subjects have to be willing and comfortable. Your pretalk should expel their fears about hypnosis and your demeanor would hopefully give them confidence. They know you're practicing put they need to know that you can do no harm, even as a newbie. Relaxation inductions are gentle and pleasant if the client is so inclined, but perhaps some of your family would benefit from a more authoritative induction so as to instill a little more confidence in your ability. Have you studied different types of inductions? Have you taken the Elman induction? I usually use Elman and then self, or instant on follow up. Some people like relaxation inductions, but I generally save those for at home CDs and use office time for the "work". Before I do an induction, and after the pretalk and questions, I ask the client "are you ready to do hypnosis with me?'' "Will you follow my directions?" and for me I also ask permission to touch the shoulder, arm, hand and forehead. This verbal assent is important. It sets the stage. I remember when I was just doing relaxation inductions I had a client who just wouldn't do eye-lock. It was one of the reasons I went back and took another 9-day course. the bottom line is all hypnosis is self-hypnosis and they have to want to "go there". So really you are trying to understand what is stopping them and realize that if you're part of the reason, it's not because you're doing anything wrong. Remove the fears. Then it doesn't matter what type of induction you use. But be prepared that some people only 'think' they want to do hypnosis. Good Luck (mindweavers)

I would just like to thank you all ever so much for taking the time to reply to my posts, your help is much appreciated.i think i am new to this and maybe lacking in confidence especially with members of the family i feel the need for it to 'work' so to speak ! i had a bit of luck with my eldest daughter, when practising on her she said she felt not hypnotised but a nice tingling sensation in her legs and arms ( thats how i feel when i listen to my own hypnosis CD ).so i believe things may be looking up ! anyway thanks again to you help to all have been a great help Take Care Debbie (our-kate)

hi mindweavers Thanks for your post can you explain Elam Induction please Debbie :? (our-kate)

Hi "our-kate" It's an induction developed by Dave Elman and considered a standard in the industry. It quickly induces eye-lock and then tests for somnambulism by amnesia. If you're taking a hynosis course, I'm sure it will be covered at some point. Ask your instructor. You really need hands-on training to learn it correctly. You might consider buying his book "Hypnotherapy". It's recommended reading in many hypnosis courses. (mindweavers)

thanks mindweavers i will consider the book ,i do agree about your comment about personal traing my course is home study and i think this is what is causing me so many stumbling blocks , i have so much to ask but unfortunately the mentor can only spare a few minutes of his time. however i have been helped a great deal from you and Charles and others from this forum which is much appreicated Debbie (our-kate)
