Past Life Regression
[Back]
I am very interested in past lives and know that a form of regression through hypnosis can be employed to explore this aspect of ourselves.
However I know that there is a divide in professional opinion regarding the validity of regressions through hypnotherapy . . .
. . . some psychologists believe that the regressed person is accessing dormant thought patterns and combining these with subconsciously remembered historical learning, life events and so on to form a completely fabricated existence to act as a buffer in making sense of what they find in their lifetime.
. . . while other professionals believe that we are in actuality accessing the memories of our high selves . . . our souls and what we endured in our past lives colours what we find in this lifetime.
As an example, I know someone who has had many throat ailments, when regressed to explore past lives, the point of their passing seemed always to involve throat related deaths ie hanging, choking, throat cut and so on . . . sorry a bit gruesome :? . . . was this a recall of past lifetimes or was this person subconsciously making up a 'story' to explain away recurrent illnesses?
Personally I believe that we have lived many lifetimes. I would be interested the views of others regarding this.

This is a very interesting topic..
Thank you for starting it..
I will try past life regression later..my therapist is interested in this aspect and so am I.
I have had a past life psychic reading and I have managed to pick up some of past life experience from another..this was not in any way complete but in fact it did clearly explain some behaviour and anxiety ...
Not everyone believes in past lives..still less that we can recall them under hypnosis..
I look forward to further comments on this thread.. :) :) :D (Quest)
Yes I agree thanks again Blue Fairy for bringing up this topic. I do know a lot of people rubbish this idea saying the figures don't add up when you consider the Earths population. Personally I think that's taking a very narrow view as we don't really understand the nature of reallity. Scientists theorise the posibility of a Multiverses rather than a Universe so it seems to me that it's perfectly possible. I travel with an open mind believing in possibilties. While trying not to get taken in by deliberate deceptions I would never rubbish anyones personal story. So many people think they are being clever by rubbishing all of this sort of thing. I have a friend who believes that "This is all there is" saying there is no proof of a life after death or before birth come to that :) but I say proove to me that there isn't!! (Linda)I agree . . . without being open minded there would be no room for growth or learning on any level.
Apparently, a hypnotherapist is able to validate regressed past life recall by asking a series of specific questions which distinguish between this and apparent acting out of a subconscious fantasy . . .
Mr BF was regressed and recalled a past life that he has been able to verify by linking remembered places and events with factual information.
I find the whole subject fascinating . . .

Hi all,
First I should let you know that I am a practicing Hypnotherapist and a Fella ( In case the handle is a bit confusing!!) I'm also a Psychotherapist and Counsellor.
The whole concept of past lives is really fascinating, hopefully I can shed a little light on it but it will still retain its question mark.
It is true that there are methods a Hypnotherapist can use to validate, but unfortunately it still isn't a guarantee of authenticity. One school of thought is that memories can be passed on through lineage, so the recalled memory could be that of a Great, Great, Great Grandmother or Father.
This has been justified because medical research has discovered brain cells in parts of the body other than the Brain and of course Brain cells contain memory, therefore logically, though only theoretically, inheritance can't be excluded.
In the vast majority of regressions that I have been involved with, there is very little information that is checkable. This too is logical because if you go back a few hundred years most people would have been illiterate and innumerate. Likewise, the further back you go, fewer records were kept and many that were have been lost along the way. That isn't to say that some amazing stuff often surfaces, just that it's very difficult to validate it.
As to sub conscious fantasy, again a valid point and arguable either way - I remember when I first qualified and decided to try out my new found ability on my then Girlfriend - I managed to induce trance in her very quickly and to be honest had expected to fail. I now had a nicely hypnotised subject but didn't know quite what to do with her.
I decided to try regression and to my surprise she shot back to the 1800s in Victorian London. She gave me a very detailed account of general life etc, but couldn't be sure of the year or even where she was. It transpired that she was a drunk (Gin) and died in an asylum from drink related illness.
The lady in question is absolutely hopeless at copying accents, yet she had the most perfect cockney accent I had heard and frankly I was convinced - that is until she told me, some 6 months later, that her favourite film as a child was My Fair Lady and that she had watched it a million times and had often wished she had lived Eliza Doolittle’s life thanks to a miserable childhood!!
My last offering for today ( or this will end up a Book) is on the often posed question that Linda mentioned - that is the question of the ever increasing population of Planet Earth and all the extra spirits required for us to each have one. In addition, this would seem to imply that there must be a fresh batch of living souls every year that would not have had a past life since we all must start somewhere. Hurts your Brain doesn't it!!
I've often pondered the question myself and rather than give you my views I'll point you in the direction of an interesting book co written by a well known American Hypnotist called Dick Sutphen and Lauren Leigh Taylor. The Book is called 'Past Life Therapy in Action'. It was written in the 1980s and may well be out of print now, but a second hand copy shouldn't be too difficult to obtain.
In it he answers exactly that question, it's certainly logical but I'll leave you to explore that one.
One final thing, from the purely therapeutic perspective - I don't really care what the truth is, I just care that when I utilise it with my Clients in order to bring about change - IT WORKS!!
Hope this helps fuel the debate - keep it up.
Best Wishes and good health to all.
 :D  (Dragonfly)Hi Dragonfly..
Thank your for your post..most interesting.
With regard to your girlfriend who spoke with a cockney accent..this is logical ...
If for example she really did live in Victorian London as she portrayed, she recalled the accent as she stepped back..and if she was drawn as a child to Eliza Doolittle’s life character then this is logical also..for the link to her past life would encourage this aspect.
We do often try to find 'rational' explanations often..'this is because' and so on..and in fact we pull on threads that tend to satisfy logical explanation.
As I showed in a previous post I was asked about an unusual behaviour pattern and linked this with two past lives for someone..I am psychic..(we all are) and am often shown things.
This case involved a girl waking in the night and frantically looking for her jewelery..which was actually quite safe. I was given two scenarios which explained this..each was traumatic and to a degree each was similar..in that jewelery was seized under difficult and frightening circumstace.
The pattern in place is repeated in at least two lives and an aspect of the event is replayed by the owner...
I have had a psychic past life reading and for me of interest is pattern again..for much of the reading gave me insight into my childhood..my life now and my abilities...so much by way of pattern...amazing.!
I also found my previous lives touched some people ..(many) that I know in this life..as if we are all thrown together again and again to interact and learn...each from one another.
I have been shown my first life..and I saw myself..and this person was presented to me in meditation..This was very moving..a fantastic experience...and this was validated by the past life reading I had..exactly.
Sorry this is so long... I could go on..but this whole field I find fascinating..
I will have past life hynosis from my hypnotherpist later...!

Just to say a quick 'thank you' to Dragonfly and Quest for their interesting and thought provoking postings. I can't remember the name of the book I read on this subject many years ago but I was quite fired up when I read it only to wonder afterwards if I and/or the author had been a bit gullable. I can't quite decide if I like the idea or not ........ it sounds so tiring to have to keep coming back!! Also I'm hoping to meet my dear dad and my son again and what if they've (to coin a phrase :) ) been 'born again' by the time I pass over?
I'm looking forward to reading more on this topic from people better informed than myself! (Linda)Hi again,
Don't get a lot of time so posts will be a bit infrequent, don't think I'll qualify for the free CD somehow !!
Anyway, hats off to Charles for creating this forum, I think it will prove to be an interesting resource as the number of members swell.
[b:ee6bb97a12]Quest[/b:ee6bb97a12] - A really interesting response, I have never had that kind of psychic experience and am always interested in those that have. How did you first experience a connection and how did you react ?? Hope you don't mind my asking, it is out of genuine interest.
In principle I would agree with you that we tend to seek a rational explanation for things and your interpretation of what happened with my ex girlfriend has credence, what are your thoughts on the other school of thought that the memories are passed on from ancestors ??
[b:ee6bb97a12]Linda[/b:ee6bb97a12] - thanks for your comments, and I can't help but agree with you as it does sound a bit tedious, especially if the life experienced wasn't very nice. Back to the book I mentioned in my last post, Dick Sutphen is convinced (though don't quote me on my interpretation please!!) that we have what he calls a super soul and that stays on the other side if I can call it that. This super soul has the ability to kind of clone itself into more and more parts and this ability grows through the experiences gained down here.
So what he is saying is that we are over there as a super soul and at the same time down here in perhaps a number of bodies. It gives an answer to the ever increasing population question that the subjects critics like to level and in a sense would give you the best of both worlds, (I think there might be a joke there somewhere:lol: ) In that you can have your further adventures down here in multiples and see your Son and Dad at the same time!!
I hope that didn't sound crass, I'm just trying to lighten what can become a quite depressing and scary subject.
Also in other books I've read we apparently plan these expeditions on purpose and set out a plan of what we will experience, sometimes on our own and sometimes with the help of advisers, though why we would want to experience some of the awful things humans go through is a bit beyond me. They also say that you don't have to come back, as you can elect to do a job that keeps you on the other side. I wonder what [b:ee6bb97a12]Quest[/b:ee6bb97a12] makes of these concepts??
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that if anything I have read is true - I think you'll get to do whatever you feel is right for you - so good luck.
Best Wishes and good health to all

Dragonfly..
To see myself as I was ..to go back that far..was amazing...
I have a CD which I used for the first time to find this..it was as if everything was waiting..for the figure before me gazed into my eyes..the power was overwhelming..he gripped my shoulder firmly..he has in his had a staff and I was surprised at the thickness of it..a heavy strong staff which indicated his strength...and he presented as a very strong figure indeed.
My reaction was of acceptance..and I felt a great deal of love..no fear at all.
The experience was very clear..and to find this further validated in a past life reading was important to me..how could it not be..?
So I know what I know..and as I have said before on this site..we all have our own realities and experiences.
I have not read Sulphen..however the Super Soul I read as The Higher Self..and we have this..for we are all we have been but cannot access all the knowledge all the learning we have gained on this plane.
More is possible than not..and I have heard of many concepts..it is for each of us to accept what we feel comfy with.
We do plan a great deal of our Earth Walk..but between the landmarks the path can become muddied and we can lose our way..many do..but the plan exists and we are given choices.
We have free will...so we are able to do wrong..to lose our way...
We have opportunity to learn from interaction with negative and positive forces presented by many different energies and circumstance.
This planet is composed of Kingdoms and our actions reflect on one Kingdom or many..where there is action is reaction..
Actions are causal..and we do not usually see the results clearly..an analagy is the pebble thrown in the pond..and the ripples.
We are energy as eveything is..thoughts are energy and they carry great weight.. . I cannot access all I know..none of us can..however consider the life plan agreed by a Soul that gives great pain and suffering as a coat.
The learning potential from this is mighty..
Every breath we take is opportunity .. we are blessed in our circumstance and our endeavour ..for our learning is our Soul development and growth..
Len :) (Quest)I'm interested in this. I have to say I do *not* believe in God(s), heaven, hell, all that stuff. I don't want to believe in life after death. Then I had a very strange experience in Egypt: we were walking through a certain tomb, and I suddenly had something very like a panic attack. I felt claustrophobic, crushed, an overwhelming sense of evil and terror for my own life: even though this was a relatively quiet spot.
I mentioned this to a friend who is a healer, a great believer in the psychic realm and so on, who said that she **in the same place in the same tomb** had also experienced an overwhelming sense of evil, and believed that something very terrible had been done at that spot. We both surmised that I could have visited the scene of a previous death. Some investigation of the archaeological record confirmed that deaths had happened at this spot.
I don't know if I believe this or not: I'm aware that there are many other explanations for "cold spots", and feeling claustrophobic in a tomb is not exactly unlikely! Nevertheless, I feel I'd like to explore this and see if I can get back to some sense of that other life.
I'm wondering if regression is something I can manage on my own, or if I would need a therapist. I know that using Charles' nail-biting CD, I completely spontaneously remembered being a very small child, things I'd forgotten for *years*. But I have a feeling this is rather different. Possibly not something that clinical hypnotherapists really deal with?
Any suggestions of where to start will be gratefully received. Sorry for the essay! (biddy)Hi Biddy..
Regression is not something to try on your own..and you do need a skilled person with you..
I can sometimes pick up things for others but not a great deal..and for myself also....this is very different than self regression which I dont consider desirable.
Safety and well being is of paramount importance ..
I suggest you are gentle in all aspects of this.so find a good hypnotherapist....
